Kimono Challenge #1 – How did you discover and get into kimono?

A number of kimono bloggers are doing this, and while I’m late to the game, it’s better late than never!

2. Your dearest kimono item(s).
3. Your most used kimono item(s) (not counting jubans, datejimes etc.).
4. Your least used kimono item(s).
5. Your favourite coordination(s) so far.
6. What do you like and don’t like about kimono.
7. Kimono confessions. Did you know that…
8. Your dream kitsuke items (or at least items you really really want but can’t get for whatever reason).
9. Your biggest kimono fears.
10. Your biggest kimono inspiration.
11. Your kimono collection.
12. The evolution of your kitsuke.
13. Your special kimono memory.

1. How did you discover and get into kimono?
I’ve had an interest in fashion and textiles from different cultures ever since I was a little girl, but the colours, patterns and silhouette of kimono was the most aesthetically pleasing to my sensibilities.    However, it wasn’t until I started researching geisha that I found myself becoming intrigued with the intricacies and history of kimono – specific patterns for specific seasons, subtle placement or adjustments in kitsuke which could indicate social class, age, marital status, etc.

This lead to me starting my kimono collection in 2001/2002 and then shortly after, working on teaching myself kitsuke with the limited resources available at the time. Around the same time, I also became heavily involved in taiko, which offered me opportunity to help dress taiko players, dancers and koto performers in kimono along with designing and sewing historical kimono costumes for stage performances.
